Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be able to:
- Explain the fundamental principles, functions and socio-economic role of insurance and the professional roles of surveyors and loss adjusters within the insurance value chain;
- Identify the characteristics, risks and surveying requirements of major insurance classes, including property and fire, engineering, motor, marine and transport, agriculture and other general insurance business;
- Apply key insurance principles, including insurable interest, utmost good faith, indemnity, proximate cause, subrogation and contribution, in risk assessment and claims evaluation;
- Identify and evaluate physical, moral, environmental and other hazards, assess their relevance to underwriting, and recommend appropriate risk-improvement and loss-prevention measures;
- Conduct structured surveys and loss assessments using appropriate approaches to site inspection, investigation, evidence gathering, causation, damage evaluation, loss quantification and contemporary digital assessment technologies;
- Evaluate claims-related information and supporting evidence, identify inconsistencies and potential fraud indicators, and prepare clear, objective and defensible survey and loss-adjustment reports to support technically sound claims decisions;
- Explain Takaful, inclusive insurance, microinsurance and index-based solutions and their relevance to evolving insurance markets in East Africa and the wider African region; and
- Apply integrity, independence, objectivity, confidentiality, competence, due care and accountability while recognising applicable regulatory requirements, professional standards and ethical responsibilities.
