Preface

Welcome to the Executive Certificate in Climate Risk Insurance.

This programme has been designed for professionals who are engaging with one of the most complex and rapidly evolving challenges facing the insurance sector today: how to understand, manage, and finance climate and disaster risk in a changing world.

Climate change is not only increasing the frequency and severity of extreme events, but also altering risk patterns, data reliability, and long-standing insurance assumptions. As a result, climate risk insurance now requires more than traditional technical skills. It demands the ability to integrate climate science, data analytics, disaster risk finance, underwriting judgement, product design, pricing, and governance—often in environments characterised by uncertainty and imperfect information.

This Executive Certificate takes a practical, decision-oriented approach. Rather than treating climate risk insurance as a purely academic or technical subject, the programme focuses on how real insurance and risk finance decisions are made in practice. Throughout the course, you will be guided through the full climate risk insurance value chain, from understanding climate risks and data limitations, to designing and evaluating insurance and risk transfer solutions at market, meso, and sovereign levels.

The programme is intentionally global in perspective, drawing on international best practice in climate risk insurance and disaster risk finance. At the same time, it is grounded in the realities of emerging and climate-vulnerable markets, where data constraints, fiscal pressures, and institutional complexity are common. This balance reflects a central theme of the course: effective climate insurance solutions must be technically sound, yet adaptable to real-world conditions
